“One of the really cool things about sailing around the world is you get to go down to the Southern Ocean, and one of the amazing things you see down there is the albatross.” Peter Burling

LIVE OCEAN

The ocean conservation charity Live Ocean was founded in 2019 by America’s Cup winning and Olympic gold medalist sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. Their vision is for New Zealand to be a world leading champion in ocean health. They aim to amplify and accelerate positive ocean action in New Zealand through support and investment in promising marine science, innovation, technology and marine conservation projects.

As sailors on the cutting edge of technology, supporting both science and innovation is central to their beliefs, interests and sport. With Live Ocean they bring their ambition and competitive spirit to challenge New Zealanders to protect and restore their ocean.

The Antipodean Albatross – Sentinel of the Ocean

With their 3-metre wingspan, ability to smell food hours before they see it and travel incredible distances in harsh conditions, the albatross is a reminder for sailors in the Southern Pacific Ocean just who the real expert navigators are.

The Antipodean Albatross is endangered. As kaitiakitanga of the oceans we are failing this taonga and need to look after them. Live Ocean is working to reverse the slide to extinction by insisting that the world’s fishing fleets use Albatross-safe techniques.

“For Polynesians and Māori, the albatross (toroa) is the Great Navigator, the one we aspired to be. They’ve been by our side for centuries as we’ve voyaged right across the Pacific.” Noenoe Barclay-Kerr (Voyager - Waikato, Ngāti Māhuta)
